Greg Calixte has probably dunked in a game a few dozen times this season. Throwing a few down at the County Center, though, just feels a little different.
“It’s a great feeling,” the 6-foot-9 Mount Vernon senior said. “I got some great passes from my teammates and I just had to finish them.”
Calixte’s two alley-oop slams highlighted the top-seeded Knights’ runaway 72-49 victory over rival New Rochelle in the Section 1 Class AA semifinals on Friday at the Westchester County Center. It was the third win over New Ro this season and the 10 consecutive in the rivalry since losing in the 2013 title game.
Mount Vernon (18-4) reached the Section 1 final for the 19th year in a row. They’ve won 14 of the last 17 Gold Balls.
The Knights meet No. 3 seed Scarsdale, a team league they beat twice in the regular season, in hopes of recapturing the crown after losing to Fox Lane in last year’s final.
“What happened last year is definitely on our minds,” Mount Vernon senior Noah Morgan said. “We lost here last year. We know that we are seniors and we can’t go out like the way we did last year. So we’re focused.”
Morgan had a team-high 16 points on 8 of 14 shooting, along with six rebounds.
The 6-foot-5 wing was in the middle of the Knights’ two biggest runs. His 3-pointer a minute into the second quarter started an 11-0 spurt to help put Mount Vernon up 16 at the half. Morgan had six points in an 10-2 run in the third to break open a 23-point advantage entering the fourth.
“We came in here and played with a focus and played as a team,” Morgan said. “You see what happened."
Mount Vernon shot 58-percent from the field and outrebounded New Ro 38-23.
Demetre Roberts had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists while Jason Douglas-Stanley had 13 points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter.
“This was a dangerous game,” Calixte said. “We just came in and executed. We feel like we are getting better and better every game.”
Jarett Haines led New Rochelle with 19 points.
