Rutgers' men's basketball team enjoyed a memorable
week, and Mount Vernon's Mike Coburn was honored yesterday for his role
in it.
The freshman guard was named Big East men's
basketball rookie of the week after averaging 20 points and four assists
in back-to-back wins over No. 13 Pittsburgh and No. 18 Villanova.
Coburn had a career-high 23 points in the 80-68 win
against Villanova, shooting 8 of 13 from the floor and 2 of 2 from
3-point range. It was Rutgers' first win against a ranked opponent since
beating Louisville, which was ranked No. 22, on Jan. 28, 2006.
Pomona's JR Inman was the last Rutgers player to be
named Big East rookie of the year. He earned the honor on Jan. 30, 2006.
Inman also played a big role in the big wins last
week. The 6-foot-9 junior forward had 12 points and six rebounds against
Pitt and eight points and eight rebounds against Villanova.
